Kroger fights hunger with $10,000 grant to MIFA
MIFA has received a $10,000 grant from the Kroger Foundation that will go towards MIFA’s Meals program. For the third consecutive year, the company’s foundation grant will help MIFA feed over 2,000 seniors every weekday in the Memphis area thanks to the support of local Kroger employees.
“We are extremely grateful to Kroger for joining us in our effort to reduce hunger among Memphis seniors,” said Margaret Craddock, MIFA Executive Director. “Our meals program provides hot nutritious meals as well as added years of independence for low income seniors.”
Accredited by the Meals on Wheels Association of America, MIFA meals meets the gold standard for meals programs nationwide for operating at the highest standards for safety, quality and efficiency. “Kroger’s contribution helps our senior nutrition program meet the national seal of approval from the Meals on Wheels Association,” Craddock stated.
With its support of MIFA, Kroger acknowledges the importance of the Meals on Wheels program. Among the states with the greatest risk of senior hunger, Tennessee ranks 16th, according to a 2009 national research study commissioned by the Meals on Wheels Association of America. The study also revealed that in the United States through the mid-2000s, over 5 million seniors – 11.4 percent of all seniors – experienced some form of food insecurity.
