MIFA to Host Mayors for Meals Day March 18

Memphis, Tennessee (March 12, 2009) – On Wednesday, March 18, several local officials will be serving their constituents in an extraordinary way.

Held in conjunction with the Meals On Wheels Association of America, the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) is participating in the national March For Meals program, an annual campaign intended to increase public awareness, recruit volunteers and increase local fundraising. As part of this program, Wednesday, March 18 has been set aside as Mayors For Meals Day, when mayors and other government leaders across the country will show support for their local Meals On Wheels affiliates by delivering meals to seniors. Last year, more than 1,000 officials delivered meals in recognition of this national event.

MIFA Meals provides more than 2,200 seniors in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton and Lauderdale counties with a hot, nutritious meal each weekday and on certain Saturdays throughout the year. As MIFA’s largest program, it takes more than $3 million annually and approximately 80 volunteers daily to make this program a reality. MIFA Meals is funded under the Older Americans Act through the Aging Commission of the Mid-South, and by the City of Memphis, individuals, corporations, congregations and foundations.

The March For Meals and Mayors For Meals programs are national initiatives sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America.
