1968

Racial tensions reached their breaking point and the weight of poverty and social strife bore down on Memphis. Champions took action and created MIFA.

1974

Senior hunger was on the rise and a homebound population faced poor nutrition, illness, and isolation. Champions took action and MIFA Meals on Wheels was born.

1980

Many Memphians could not afford the most basic necessities for their families. Champions took action and provided critical assistance through Emergency Services.

2007

Less than 50% of students in MIFA’s neighborhood graduated high school and only 4.5% completed college. Champions took action and offered hope and opportunity through COOL (College Offers Opportunities for Life).

Today

Memphis makes the headlines all too often, as our nation’s hunger capital and poorest major metropolitan area. Join the next generation of champions and take action to guarantee a better future for our city.

MIFA Champions take action

MIFA Champions help us continue providing essential services to our neighbors who need them most.

Thanks to our supporters:

  • We served 291,915 hot meals last year to help 1,874 senior clients remain independent and in their own homes.
  • Of the 161 graduates since the COOL program began, 86% are still enrolled in college.
  • And despite the increased need created by our nation’s recession—requests for utility assistance have increased 60% since 2010, while rent requests increased 104% and mortgage 41%—Emergency Services continues to assist families facing utility cut-offs, eviction, and growing debt.
