MIFA serves more than 55,000 individuals annually and engages the community to sustain the independence of seniors, transform the lives of families in crisis, and equip teens for success.

 

Sustaining the independence of seniors

MIFA Meals on wheels

MIFA Meals on Wheels delivers over 3,300 hot, nutritious lunches daily to seniors at their homes and at congregate sites.


Handyman

Handyman provides wheelchair ramps for low-income senior homeowners and works to combat blight in targeted neighborhoods (FY12 targeted neighborhood: ZIP code 38109).

Senior Companion

MIFA's Senior Companions are low-income, active seniors who earn stipends by serving homebound peers.

Long-Term Care Ombudsman

MIFA’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman program advocates for the rights of thousands of residents in nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, and residential care homes.

MIFA Transit

MIFA's oldest program transports seniors to appointments around the city.

 

Transforming the lives of families in crisis

Emergency Services

MIFA's Emergency Services department provides assistance with rent, utilities, food, clothing, and other necessities for families suffering from an unexpected loss of income.

 

Emergency Housing Partnership

The Emergency Housing Partnership provides assessments and referrals to emergency shelters, transitional housing, rental assistance, and rapid re-housing assistance.

 

MIFA Housing Opportunities

MHO offers homeless families a fresh start through transitional housing and comprehensive life skills education.

 

Life Skills Institute

The Life Skills Institute provides life-changing education that guides MIFA Housing Opportunities clients toward self-improvement and independence.

 

Equipping teens for success

COOL (College offers opportunities for life)

MIFA's COOL program provides resources, mentoring, and life skills education to help prepare teens for the college application process.

  • MIFA serves 55,000 individuals each year

  • 74% of children in MIFA's neighborhood live in poverty

  • 86% of every dollar donated goes directly to MIFA's programs

  • In the area MIFA serves, almost 30% of those over the age of 65 live alone

  • MIFA was founded in 1968

  • Memphis' unemployment rate has been close to 10% since 2009

  • MIFA's Ombudsman program's 2 staff and 60 volunteers serve over 7,000 residents of long term care facilities

  • Only 4.5% of residents in the 38126 ZIP code have college degrees

  • Emergency Services provided assistance for 25,000 people last year

  • In 2010 and 2011, 100% of COOL seniors graduated from high school

  • MIFA Meals on Wheels serves 1,800 seniors every weekday
