Senior Companion

Why We Do It

In the area MIFA serves, almost 30% of those over age 65 live alone. Our goal is twofold: to help homebound seniors maintain their dignity and independence while remaining in their own homes, as well as to provide eligible, low-income, active seniors with supplemental income and an opportunity to serve their peers through our program.

What We Do

Senior Companion pairs active, low-income seniors with homebound, disabled, or critically ill peers. Companions provide respite to caregivers and assist clients with grocery shopping, bill paying, and other daily tasks that promote independent living. The most important thing aspect is human interaction, which improves the quality of life for both individuals.

What We've Done

One hundred Senior Companions currently serve over 600 clients in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, and Lauderdale Counties. Two hundred of these clients live in their own homes, while 400 live in other facilities. Ninety-two percent of those clients who live at home report that Senior Companions help them remain independent and in their own homes. The program also allows 83% of clients’ caregivers to work.

What Can You Do to Help?

If you are over the age of 60, active, and low-income, you may be eligible to serve your peers as a Senior Companion. Please keep in mind that, due to the number of caring individuals who would like to assist their peers, a waiting list exists for this program.
